Magic Kingdom- 1978

Today our friend Mary Jo Collins takes us around the outermost rings of the Magic Kingdom Hub to meet a couple of characters then to rest a little. We start on the Liberty Square-to-Fantasyland trail with the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland. Then head a little south to meet Miss Bianca from The Rescuers, released only four years earlier. We stop for a snapshot on the Liberty Square-to-Adventureland bridge then sit down for some Coca-Cola. Let's hope we see a few swan boats go by!

Thanks Mary Jo for the wonderful photos.

Mickey and Minnie at Magic Kingdom- 1970s

I like to refer to this version of Mickey Mouse as “The Vacation Kingdom Mickey”. At this time he was short, slender, had a heavier widow's peak, pointier ears, and had five fingers. Minnie had similar features and dressed in super cute outfits.

Fantastic photos taken at Magic Kingdom sent to us by Jeffrey Lipack.

Polynesian Village Resort- 1985

The Polynesian Village Resort Hotel was renamed Disney's Polynesian Resort sometime in 1985. These beautiful photos from Dan Zuccarelli were also taken sometime in 1985. Isn't the Poly the best place to stay on property?? 'Tis my favorite.

Lots of construction photos found here.

Waiting for Stuff- Disneyland 1963

This happy family photographs each other while they anxiously wait to... board the parking lot tram... arrive at the front gate... and climb into tea cups. What fantastic colors and clarity.

Photo one is a great shot of the old parking lot, pre-California Adventure. Remember the huge power lines?

Photo two is a wonderful shot of the trams of that era. You'll notice the outward-facing seats and lack of safety equipment.

Photo three is a fantastic shot of the old Mad Tea Party turnstile and very early queue. Check out the use of inexpensive chain link fencing behind the kids and the slightly nicer fencing in front of the kids.

Big thanks to Mark McKeon for sending the photos!

America Sings and Sam the Eagle- 1974

So my aunt sent me these first two photos and until tonight I couldn't pinpoint the occasions in photo one. I didn't know if the young marching band in photo two was related. Then Disney History Institute posted a photo of the Opening Day Ceremonies of Disneyland's America Sings.  Then Foxxfur from Passport to Dreams Old and New tweeted the third photo posted above.

It appears my aunt was at Disneyland the day America Sings opened (or perhaps sometime that week?). Of course there's a chance the photo shoot took place some other time that summer, but I doubt it. I still don't know if the marching band had anything to do with the ceremony. It appears to be a High School band.

Pictured in photo three are Sam the Eagle, Jazz Musician Count Basie, Disneyland 1974 Ambassador Carol DeKeyser, and Mickey Mouse.

Disney Afternoon Avenue- 1991 [Part 1]

These lucky kids got to experience Disney Afternoon Avenue when it was less than two months old!

Disneyland in 1991 got really wacky really quickly. The area between Storybook Land and Videopolis (Fantasyland Theater today) was converted into “Disney Afternoon Avenue”. It was sort of a precursor to Mickey’s Toontown which opened less than two years later. It was filled with television characters from Disney’s after school and Saturday morning(?) shows like DuckTales, TaleSpin, Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, Gummi Bears, etc.

The Motor Boat Cruise became Motor Boat Cruise to Gummi Glen. The Fantasyland Autopia became the Rescue Rangers Raceway. Painted plywood flats were placed around these attractions. Further north Baloo had a dressing room you could visit (what?). Not the Baloo you remember fondly from The Jungle Book. Well it’s the same Baloo but now he’s a pilot and wears clothing. You know. The dressing room was located under the Railroad tracks next to “it’s a small world” where the Toontown entrance is today. At the nearby theater a musical production called Plane Crazy entertained everyone. No, not Mickey’s first animated short Plane Crazy. It starred characters from TaleSpin.

By the end of 1991 the temporary avenue was gone. This was a time when temporary meant temporary.

Fantastic photos sent by Raschell Smith Peschke and the Smith family.

Disneyland's America on Parade- 1976 [Part 5]

Characters on floats. These particular floats depart from the American history look. Were they from some former parade? I don't know. Recognize those cats? They are friends of O'Malley The Alley Cat in The AristoCats, released just six years earlier.

Photos from Jeremiah Good.

Disneyland's America on Parade- 1976 [Part 4]

How many floats were there??? They just don't make parades like they used to.

Disneyland's America on Parade- 1976 [Part 3]

Looks like some characters got patriotic outfits, some did not. Check out Brer Fox long before Splash Mountain was built. Think the children knew who he was??
